Project guide

Understand how batteries, pumped hydro, air, flywheels, capacitors, thermal and hydrogen storage work. Compare service boundaries, site constraints and lifecycle evidence before choosing an architecture.

This centre covers electrochemical, mechanical, electrical, thermal and chemical storage. The three existing lessons, evidence checklist and procurement calculator specifically address stationary batteries. Microgrid dispatch and VPP participation remain linked to their existing topic paths.

Storage extends beyond batteries

Start with the principles and selection of batteries, pumped hydro, compressed/liquid air, flywheels, capacitors, heat and hydrogen. Training contains nine lessons; the three original lessons and procurement tool form a battery-specific path.

Project data request

State the available evidence, meter boundary and gaps. Traceable records are more useful than unverified defaults; do not place passwords or system keys in an enquiry.

Prepare evidence on one project boundary
GroupRequired evidencePurpose
DutyNet MW, duration, event count, load boundary and required service date.Separates power, energy and annual use.
AssetDC nameplate, PCS P-Q envelope, transformer losses, auxiliaries and validated limits.Reconciles components to the AC service meter.
ConditionsSOC window, temperature/altitude, retained capacity at the study year and recharge opportunity.Identifies derating and repeat-service constraints.
WarrantyCalendar/throughput/cycle clauses, test boundary, exclusions, remedies and counterparties.Establishes what is actually guaranteed.
Commercial scopeInstalled CAPEX, annual costs, replacement/augmentation plans, residual and decommissioning assumptions.Avoids comparing different cost scopes or counting degradation twice.
Acceptance and safetyInstalled configuration, test plans/results, permits, emergency access and lifecycle records.Connects a purchase claim to site evidence and handover.

Project evidence readiness check

Record evidence and a named reviewer for each gate. A gate closes only when marked verified with a reference, owner and valid review date no later than today. All six are review gates; complete evidence only prepares specialist review.

1. The AC duty and reserve are defined

A named meter point, MW, duration, event count and protected SOC policy.

2. Power and usable energy have matching conditions

PCS envelope, retained DC capacity, SOC window, losses and auxiliary boundary.

3. Warranty conditions cover the proposed duty

Dated calendar, throughput, cycle and exclusion clauses with remedies.

4. Costs share one study scope

Installed quotations, operating costs, replacement assumptions and exclusions.

5. Safety and permission evidence is identified

Applicable site requirements, competent reviewers, permit conditions and emergency plan.

6. Acceptance and lifecycle ownership are assigned

Test/acceptance matrix, configuration baseline, maintenance and retirement responsibility.

Reviewed 26 October 2026. Text, diagrams and exercises are original. All numerical cases use stated teaching assumptions, rather than site measurements or manufacturer commitments. These primary sources support the technical background; verify their applicability to each project.
